It just doesn’t matter

Monday, March 6th, 2006

Found this excellent post by Jason over at 37signals:

The best designers and the best programmers aren’t the ones with the best skills, or the nimblest fingers, or the ones who can rock and roll with photoshop or vim, they are the ones that can determine what just doesn’t matter. That’s where the real gains are made.

Most of the time you spend is wasted time on things that just don’t matter. If you can cut out the work and thinking that just doesn’t matter you’ll achieve productivity you’ve never imagined. It’s there if you just don’t pay attention to the things that don’t matter.

Very true!

Time to start saving

In Digital Bridge a while back, I said something about Penny Pincher, the software I want (er, need) to write to help me save my money. So this morning I came up with a logo (the name is now just Penny, by the way) and it’ll be my first Cocoa project. Here’s the logo:

Time management

Tuesday, February 7th, 2006

I’m having time management issues at the moment. ~sigh~ That’s why I’m writing in this blog while sitting in class. (Horror of horrors.) The trick is to pay enough attention that I can answer questions if called upon. :) Anyway, I haven’t had much time since Thursday to look into PyObjC. I do need to write Penny Pincher (and Beyond). I need more time!!! Anyway, I’ll hopefully be finishing up the Translating Scripture book layouts this week and will be able to spend more time on programming. Just a little while longer…

The ship is listing back and forth

Saturday, January 28th, 2006

I’m a to-do list person. Can’t help it. Lists here, lists there, and pretty soon lists everywhere. I carry a pocket-sized notebook around with me everywhere so I can jot down additions to my lists. I sleep with pen and paper by my bedside just in case I wake up with a new item to add. (It’s happened.) A while back I used OmniOutliner for a school paper (and incidentally I haven’t had to write a paper since then, which is nice) and today I figured I’d try it out for maintaining my main to-do list. It sure looks great. :) In fact, the checkboxes next to each item are so tempting that I’ll have to do the items just so I can check ‘em off. A new era has begun. :)

In a similar vein, my blood’s O-. Um, what I mean is, using OmniOutliner to manage my to-do list leads me to re-consider using iCal to manage my schedule (pronounced “shedyool” after the British fashion, of course). I’ve been using a paper planner and it works quite well. On the other hand, I do use my computer often enough that any kind of electronic reminders would actually get to me in time. Hmm, we’ll consider it further. I’ve tried using it a few times but I never last more than a day. Maybe it’s time for that to change.
